What's new in wayly

Every release, newest first: what changed, and what it looks like in the app.

Version 1.1.6

Latest
  • A new welcome and sign-up: your name, a unique @nick, a photo and a short tour before the map opens.
  • Signing out costs you nothing now — your activities, settings and photos wait for you and come back when you sign in again.
  • Create a film from an activity: a 3D flyover you direct — the light, the weather, the camera and lens, the colour, your photos along the trail, and what the overlay shows.
  • A weather style for the map: a forecast grid over the terrain, the hours ahead at any point, and a look two weeks out.
  • Import your workout history from Apple Health, GPS routes included — whatever your watch and its app wrote there.
  • A new launch screen that draws itself while the app wakes up.
  • Spoken turn prompts while you navigate — switch Sounds on in the route settings and keep the phone in your pocket.
  • An explorer passport: stamps for the regions and countries you have walked into, and the day you started exploring.
  • The summits you reached this month, each with the day you were there, and a card to share them.
  • Share how much of a place you have uncovered: the whole area on a fresh map, your explored ground cut out of the fog.
  • Map layers and 3D now live in one capsule, with a count of the overlays you have switched on.
  • Place names are written in your language — Cyrillic names appear in Latin letters everywhere except Ukrainian.

Version 1.1.5

Trails: routes worth walking near you, from people who have walked them. Filter by activity, difficulty and length, see them on a map, save one or download it for offline.

  • Suggest your own track: open an activity's ⋯ menu and choose "Suggest as recommended". Once we have reviewed it, it goes public in Trails with your name on it.

Version 1.1.4

An emergency screen for when a walk goes wrong: your coordinates in a form you can read out to a dispatcher, the local emergency number, how much battery and daylight you have left, the nearest shelters, and a one-tap message to a trusted contact.

58 of the world's great trails are now in the app, from the Pacific Crest and the Continental Divide to the Bibbulmun Track and the Nakasendo.

A trail passport: every ~20 km of a great trail you walk earns a stamp, on a page you can fill and share, and on the map where you earned it.

Climbing spots on the map, and paths marked with the difficulty OpenStreetMap knows: hiking, mountain hiking or alpine.

Also in this release
  • Share a track as a 3D flyover — the map tilts and follows you over real terrain instead of a flat line on a still image.
  • Give your collections their own icon, and see how many people have been to a place before you.

Version 1.1.3

  • Two new awards for the far end of the map: Seven Continents for setting foot on all seven, and Crown of the World for summiting the fourteen most famous peaks. Each opens its own checklist.
  • The app is a third lighter to download — all of the artwork is now lossless WebP, at the same quality.
  • Your track library is stored compressed, so saving an activity is quicker and a big history takes far less room on the phone.
  • Finished share videos are now cleaned up properly. They had been surviving every sweep and could sit on hundreds of megabytes.
  • Mountains keep their shape as you zoom in — the relief used to flatten out just as you arrived.

Version 1.1.2

  • Share to wayly: send a place from Google Maps, Apple Maps, Safari or a chat, and it opens in wayly as a place card.
  • Share a whole Google Maps list and it becomes a collection. You see the places on a map first, rename it if you like, and only then create it.
  • A trip's stops now sit in a swipeable strip under a timeline, with a card at the end for adding the next place.
  • Share a place collection as a story card: a night map of the area with the places you have visited lit up.
  • Open any waypoint or route in Apple Maps.
  • Rescan your photos from Settings and watch a globe fill with the places they were taken.
  • A new About screen with ways to rate the app, write to us, and find wayly online.

Version 1.1.1

  • Share your location as a link. Whoever opens it sees the route you are navigating and where you are right now, until you stop sharing — in the app if they have it, in a browser if they do not.
  • Road signs on bike and car routes: traffic lights, stop and give-way junctions and speed cameras along the planned line, plus a steep-grade warning at the foot of every climb that matters on a bicycle.
  • New ways to share: a satellite flyover of a track sized for Stories, a peak collection as three swipeable cards, and your summits and countries piling up over the map.
  • Store chains show their own logo on the map and on the place card, instead of a generic shop mark.
  • Geotagged videos from your library now play right in the photo viewer.
  • The Marmarosy collection follows the Ukraine–Romania border instead of an arbitrary cut through the massif.
  • The fog loads faster on launch — it is kept on disk instead of being rebuilt every time.

Version 1.1.0

Events: plan a meet-up on one of your routes, set the day, the meeting point and how many people fit, and let others join. You hear about it when someone signs up, comments or when a trip you joined is called off.

  • Long-distance trails, with their real source, length and ascent. Save a whole trail or just one section to your own routes, see who has walked it end to end, and share the chevron once you have.
  • Export an outing as a FIT activity for Garmin, and open it straight in Garmin's web importer. Exports now hand the file to the app that opens it, and say why when nothing can.
  • Add a region, city or village you visited by hand — for the trips that happened before the app, or without your phone.

Version 1.0.9

A map legend. Every mark and every coloured zone explained in one sheet, built from the same list the map draws from — so it can never drift out of date.

  • National parks on the map: every protected area wears its own badge, and tapping one opens the park with the places that actually sit inside its boundary.
  • Drinking water, mountain huts, campsites, viewpoints, guideposts, picnic spots, parking and pharmacies now read as themselves on the map.
  • The country grid on Progress is grouped by continent instead of one flat run of cards. Your home continent leads, and nothing reshuffles when a percentage ticks up.

Version 1.0.8

A rebuilt profile screen: your photo is the subject, with the level and your explorer title riding its shoulders, and everything else floating on a lit backdrop underneath.

  • Ground you uncovered with a geotagged photo, or simply by moving, now earns XP as well. The map and the reward finally agree on what counts as explored.
  • Adventures: swipe between Collections and Adventures, take a stop out of a trip from the stop itself, and hold anywhere on a collection's map to add a place — that gesture did nothing there before.
  • Onboarding no longer waits on your photo library. The map opens straight away and the scan reports its progress as it runs.
  • Trips stop drawing connections you never made: a leg now leaves from where a recorded track ends, not from where it started.
  • Places filed under a finished trip stay on the map — adding one no longer made it disappear.
  • Faster: opening the app no longer stalls on a large library, and adding or deleting a waypoint no longer repaints the whole world.

Version 1.0.7

Adventures — trips that already happened. Mark a planned trip as done and the route you drew becomes explored ground: every stop counts as somewhere you stood, and legs count where they cross real terrain. Summits follow on their own, and a trip can always go back to planning.

Also in this release
  • Pin a photo by hand: long-press the map and place a shot from your camera roll at coordinates you choose — for film scans and old cameras that never recorded a location.
  • Every recorded track shows its sport at the start, and route detail maps mark A and B.
  • Notification rows draw the real award or level badge.
  • Trip mode in collections is a compact row now, with a proper explainer sheet.
  • Saved places show the same icon in lists as on the map — a saved cafe was a cup on the map and a blank disc in the list.
  • Folders no longer claim to hold items and then open empty.

Version 1.0.5

Places screen — browse everything around you by Nature, Culture and Attractions, switch between Collected and Undiscovered, and sort by newest or nearest.

Also in this release
  • Passive exploration — the fog clears as you go about your day. A walk to the shop or the way to work reveals ground without recording anything.
  • Place gems — walk up to a waterfall, castle or viewpoint and collect its gem, with a heads-up when one is within reach.
  • Two new map layers: points of interest nearby, and geotagged photos from the community.
  • Live location with friends — share where you are in real time, and choose exactly which friends can see it.
  • Levels rebuilt around real places, country collections, a daily reward, and a world leaderboard ranked by countries cleared.
  • Wild camps — tents and cabins sit on the map as their own overnight spots, and past nights the app lived through are recovered.
  • Car and motorcycle activity types, and place search that understands any language you type in.
  • A new typeface across the app, and a redesigned Progress screen with a painted world fog map and per-country mosaics.
  • Roads arrive by zoom — the big ones first — open ground no longer paints as forest, and routes get a distance tag every 5 km.
  • Fixed: waypoints a few hundred metres off a route no longer fall off it, elevation gain is no longer inflated by terrain-data noise, route names come out clean, and map loads stall less often.

Version 1.0.2

Coverage chip on the map: see how much of the city, region or country you have explored, and how you compare with friends.

Also in this release
  • Waypoints: filled category icons, a proper icon for “Other”, and coordinates you can copy with one tap.
  • Reviews for places on the map, with ratings and helpful votes.
  • The profile skin no longer spins — only the blue visor follows your phone’s direction.
  • New award artwork, and awards that unlock new waypoint looks.
  • Offline maps: the free plan now covers 500 km² in total.
